National Citizen Service: School leavers offered a chance for the ‘Summer of a Lifetime’

North Staffs YMCA has been engaged by v, the young people’s volunteering charity and Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust to deliver a pilot project across the city, offering 16 year olds the chance to take the challenge of their lives. After completing their exams year 11 students are being invited to apply to take part in a free and exciting summer of activities and community events, which they will design and deliver with support from an experienced staff team.

National Citizen Service is a Big Society initiative, supporting young people from all backgrounds to work together, take on new challenges and make a difference. It is a voluntary programme for 16 year olds and includes fun and challenging activities, away from home residential experiences and a self-designed social action project. The National Citizen Service aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing young people from different backgrounds together to make a difference in their communities. Twelve pilot projects will run across England in summer 2011 giving 11,000 young people the chance to take part.

North Staffs YMCA have teamed up with Wolverhampton college to offer a challenging and fun packed week away at Kinver Scout camp in Stourbridge, participants will take part in exiting activities such as archery, climbing abseiling and zip lines. This will be followed by another week away at the C.O.G.7 centre in Nantwich where we will begin to plan a community project. We then move on to a full time week of planning and a couple of week’s part time to deliver the event.

YMCA Chief executive Danny Flynn Says “The YMCA’s national vision is that we are an inclusive Christian movement that want to see Young People, contribute, grow and thrive. Leaving school is a scary thing, you’re facing a new world of fantastic possibilities but where has everyone gone? The National Citizen Service will act as an exciting, creative bridge into those early days of independence. Young People will be taking part in activities where they will be unlocking their gifts, talents and have practical volunteering opportunities where they will learn both rights and responsibilities to themselves whilst serving others.”

If you are a year 11 student or a parent and would like more information please contact Steve Bailey or John Beswick on 01782 204975 or e-mail: steve.bailey@northstaffsymca.org.uk or you can also register online at: www.http://vinspired.com/summer-of-a-lifetime

Foundation Degree in Community Based Pioneer Ministry

Validated by Staffordshire University

The FdA in Community Based Pioneer Ministry has been developed by the Centre for Youth Ministry in partnership with St John’s Nottingham and is validated by Staffordshire University. It is designed to provide work-based training opportunities for those involved in any kind of pioneering ministry.

Beginning in September 2011, the course is work-based, with the flexibility for students to study from two to four years. Students will attend St John's for up to 18 Wednesdays a year for teaching and formational input. Online resources will be provided as part of a blended learning approach, which will give students support as they continue learning in their own place of work, provide extra resources for study and opportunities to stay connected to others in their learning group.

Throughout their time on the course, students will work in an appropriate pioneer ministry context, such as a church, Christian community project, church plant, fresh expression, chaplaincy setting, YfC centre or mission agency.

Through this practical experience they will develop their skills and have the opportunity to put into practice all they are learning through their academic work. They will also compile portfolios of their work around five competences:

  • Personal Skills

  • Facilitation Skills

  • Leadership Skills

  • Community Skills

  • Ministry Skills

Taught modules relate directly to the students’ ministry contexts and enable them to enhance their practical and theological understanding and develop their ministry skills. Types of assessment will vary to reflect different learning styles and preferences.

Modules in Year 1: Theory and Practice of Pioneer Ministry, Bible in Practice, Understanding Communities and Culture, Human Development in Practice, Models of Contextual Theology, Learning and Discipleship, Basic Skills for Pioneer Ministry.

Modules in Year 2: Spirituality for Pioneer Ministry, Entrepreneurial Skills, Approaches to Mission, Leading and Managing, Pastoral Care in Pioneer Ministry, Negotiated Study, Advanced Skills for Pioneer Ministry.

The supportive, creative and practical learning environment of MCYM courses attracts students from diverse cultural and church backgrounds with a range of different work and ministry experiences and of varying educational ability. CYM has worked in partnership with Staffordshire University since 2009.

The FdA in Community Based Pioneer Ministry, validated by Staffordshire University, is a valuable academic qualification in its own right. However, students successfully completing this award will have the opportunity to progress to a BA Honours Degree in Contextual Ministry if they wish to do so.
