This event will be an opportunity for Christians to find out how they can support Sycamore Tree, Prison Fellowship’s restorative justice programme and to find out more about how the charity seeks to reduce levels of reoffending.

Volunteers are also involved in other specific programmes, such as Angel Tree (which enables children of prisoners to receive a Christmas gift), writing letters to prisoners, pray for prisoners and those supporting the prison population in England and Wales.

Stephen Hawkins, Prison Fellowship’s Regional Coordinator for the North West region, said today: “This is an informal occasion for the Christian Community to meet together and hear about what volunteering possibilities there are with Prison Fellowship.

Volunteers already working with Prison Fellowship will be present at the event.

Funky Choir in a Day

Olympic Torch Run

(From Roy Crowne, Executive Director of HOPE)

MORE THAN GOLD - TORCH RELAY

We are writing to you on behalf of our friends at More than Gold. They are sending the message below about the 2012 Torch Relay which will likely be visiting a community near you. The Olympics will be a brilliant moment for our country, a chance to celebrate and - most of all - a real opportunity for churches to work together and do community mission.

We would love to see engagement in the Olympics as a part of the bigger plans of church collaboration and mission in your area – sharing hope through words and actions. If you think you would like to be connected in a deeper way, or lead any aspect of your local churches’ response, please email Steve.price@hopetogether.org.uk by Wednesday 25th May.

2012 Olympics is another golden opportunity, among many, to be outward-looking and tap into public consciousness and be what the Church is meant to be – visible and relevant. Let’s go for it. A highlight in the build up to the 2012 Games is the official Torch Relay starting about three months beforethe opening ceremony. The relay sees the torch carried throughout many towns and cities across the UK. The first 74 towns and cities to be visited by the London 2012 Torch Relay have been announced. I want to let you know what this means for you and your church. The places named are where evening events will take place to celebrate the Olympic Flame. The expectation of the Games organising committee is that there will be a spectacular welcome. This could involve entertainment, shows and concerts with a local flavour.

Helping churches get ready

To help churches get ready for this great opportunity, More Than Gold is creating a local task force in each town where the relay is to stop. This group will help run community events that support the official celebrations. The aim is to have the churches and More Than Gold’s partner agencies working to put the church at the centre of the plans and celebrations that take place.

Working with your Local Authority

What makes this especially important is that most Local Authorities are stretched so far as their budgets and resources are concerned. Because of this they would welcome the help of the churches in their area. In some places it may even be possible for the local churches to be the prime organiser or main partner in a Community Festival.

The help churches could contribute includes;

Creative and performing arts –offering their own talent or bringing it in from elsewhere.
Hospitality – from free food to being part of the One Million Cups of Water programme.
Volunteers – everything from clearing the rubbish, crowd control, to specialist advice and help.

How you can play your part?
To be a part of this task force please email info@morethangold.org.uk with your name, church, town and contact details so that we can network with you and get you in touch with others in your area.

Sudan Prayer Update

Following the burning of three villages and displacement of tens of thousands of people from Abyei town, an agreement was reached to pull all non-Joint Integrated Unit forces out of Abyei. Relative calm has been restored – there have been no further villages burned and no reports of fighting since Sunday. However, previous agreements have been respected by one side only. If Southern forces pull out but Northern militias claim they are Misseriya migrating through the area and do not pull out, Southerners will see this as more evidence of the international community rewarding violence from the North. Recent satellite images suggest neither side is respecting the agreement as yet.

Please pray for:

  • Provide for those displaced by recent violence

  • A changed policy from the international community

  • Grieve with God for those killed in South-South violence in Upper Nile & Jonglei

For more information or for a talk on this subject please contact Tim Flatman tflatman@gmail.com or 07595 908 405
