London Institute of Contemporary Christianity
Exciting times for Christians in the UK today. What kind of difference can we make in today's rapidly changing culture? How do we and our churches grow as fruitful followers of Jesus in the whole of life? How might we do so in such a time as this?

Our team is growing and we have three new vacancies for you to check out if our cause catches your imagination.Vacancy: Assistant Director, LICC Work Forum (Closing date November 14th)We're looking for a co-labourer for our newly appointed Director, someone to design, develop and deliver two new programmes within the Work Forum's remit: Church Works - helping churches equip the workers for the workplace and Work Start - helping young adults in their first decade of work. Dear friends

In 2001 a national survey placed Stoke-on-Trent bottom of a list of 376 towns & cities in England & Wales.

On 31 October 2001, around 200 local Christians met together for a one-off prayer gathering using 2 Chron 7.14 as a basis for prayer, worship & sharing.

Many of you will know that this gathering became the springboard for the local 2C7 prayer movement. During the next seven years monthly city-wide prayer gatherings were supplemented with other seasons of united prayer. We organised weeks of unbroken 24-7 prayer, specific months of unbroken prayer & also two periods of 40 days of prayer & fasting.

I believe that one of the significant outcomes of our united praying was the emergence & raising up of the Beacon House of Prayer. Over the last decade such houses of prayer have been birthed in different parts of the UK. I am honoured to be able to say that God has gifted the Body of Christ in North Staffs with one of the best developed & best resourced prayer houses in the nation.

In 2012, the Beacon House of Prayer launches a year of unbroken prayer under the title “Why not pray for a change?”

I am writing this email to you to ask if you would consider individually supporting this strategic initiative?

There are two specific ways that individuals like you can practically get involved:

i) Pray where you are:
· Choose to pray & fast once a month (or once a week).
· No need to visit the Beacon HOP, simply pray & fast at home or work.
· Complete the simple form on the ‘get involved’ website section: www.whynotprayforachange.co.uk/get-involved

ii) Pray at the Beacon House of Prayer:
· We are looking for people who will register for a prayer watch weekly, fortnightly or monthly
· Visit for one or two hours
· Choose either day or night
· The Beacon need 100 local people to register – be one of the 100!
· Sign up on the website & then choose your specific dates & times: www.whynotprayforachange.co.uk/signup
If you would like to talk to one of the Beacon team call 01782 827238 or email: whynotpray@btconnect.com (see Cc above).

Finally, your local church can also get involved. The Beacon is looking for 25 local churches who will offer to come & pray on two Saturdays during 2012. Why not talk to your church leader & encourage them to think about getting more people praying from your church.

Having sought God together using the ‘IF’ from the Old Testament (2 Chron 7.14) many of us are now believing that we will see the promise of the ‘IF’ from the New Testament - “If you believe you will see the GLORY of God” (John 11.40). This year of unbroken prayer in 2012 may be part of the ushering in of such GLORY…to that end, let me encourage you to play your part & get involved.

Every Blessing
Lloyd

Exciting times for Christians in the UK today. What kind of difference can we make in today's rapidly changing culture? How do we and our churches grow as fruitful followers of Jesus in the whole of life? How might we do so in such a time as this?

Choose to pray & fast once a month (or once a week).
No need to visit the Beacon HOP, simply pray & fast at home or work.
Complete the simple form on the ‘get involved’ website section: www.whynotprayforachange.co.uk/get-involved

ii) Pray at the Beacon House of Prayer:
We are looking for people who will register for a prayer watch weekly, fortnightly or monthly
Visit for one or two hours
Choose either day or night
The Beacon need 100 local people to register – be one of the 100!
Sign up on the website & then choose your specific dates & times: www.whynotprayforachange.co.uk/signup

Lloyd

Oliver Branch Training

Fire Safety Awareness Courses

The training courses listed below are open to all. Additional courses can be arranged on request for Local Churches and Mothers Union Branches

· Monday 5th September am - Cannock Community Room

· Wednesday 7th September am - Uttoxeter Community Room

· Tuesday 20th September am - Sandyford Community Room

· Friday 23rd September pm - Tamworth Community Room

· Monday 3rd October am - Cannock Community Room

· Wednesday 12th October am - Uttoxeter community Room

· Friday 14th October pm - Tamworth Community Room

· Tuesday 18th October am - Sandyford Community Room

The Olive Branch Programme was initially launched in mid 2007 following the tragic fire death of Olive Simcock. One of the lessons learnt following her death was for key agencies to engage in closer partnership working to better communicate and refer vulnerable persons to the appropriate agency or organisation.

Staffordshire Fire & Rescue are committed to reducing the number of accidental dwelling fires which result in injury or death for the most vulnerable members of our communities through partnership working. Olive Branch Training is completely FREE of charge, the team self sufficient and if necessary venues can be provided.

We aim to ensure all home visitors involved with caring for the elderly, disabled and vulnerable on a daily basis, are trained to identify hazards and vulnerabilities within the home and to understand and know how to deal with and reduce these risks.

In addition, Olive Branch training will inform & train home visitors to identify when to refer to Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service for a Home Fire Risk Check, thus enabling the Fire Service to engage with our most vulnerable community members, give advice on Fire Safety in the Home and provide any necessary smoke alarms or assisted technology equipment to ensure the occupants are as safe as possible.

The session is primarily based around a case study, PowerPoint presentation & a hazard spotting DVD, where deliverers will encourage audience participation.

The Olive Branch team are based at Central Risk Reduction in Stafford; its members are Martin Hall, Jane Moss & Rebecca Gill.

To gain more information or book training sessions, we are contactable on 01785 898559 or olivebranch@staffordshirefire.gov.uk

Mental Heath First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a two day training course and explores the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.

Aims:

  • To preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others

  • To provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state.

  • To promote the recovery of good mental health

  • To provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem

Bereavement Course

This course, originally offered at Holy Trinity, Brompton, is for anyone experiencing the pain and loss of bereavement, whether recently or over several years. Working through grief takes a very long time, and for no two people will the journey be the same. Based on Christian principles, the course is suitable for anyone with or without a Christian faith or church background. Topics covered include:

· Attachment, separation and loss

· Death in our culture

· The pain of grief

· Adjusting to change

· A Christian perspective

Each evening begins with a short talk before we separate into small groups for discussion/ support. There are opportunities for sharing for those who feel able to, but no-one is put under any pressure to do more than they wish and confidentiality is maintained. Foundation Degree in Community Based Pioneer Ministry

Validated by Staffordshire University

The FdA in Community Based Pioneer Ministry has been developed by the Centre for Youth Ministry in partnership with St John’s Nottingham and is validated by Staffordshire University. It is designed to provide work-based training opportunities for those involved in any kind of pioneering ministry.

Beginning in September 2011, the course is work-based, with the flexibility for students to study from two to four years. Students will attend St John's for up to 18 Wednesdays a year for teaching and formational input. Online resources will be provided as part of a blended learning approach, which will give students support as they continue learning in their own place of work, provide extra resources for study and opportunities to stay connected to others in their learning group.

Throughout their time on the course, students will work in an appropriate pioneer ministry context, such as a church, Christian community project, church plant, fresh expression, chaplaincy setting, YfC centre or mission agency.

Through this practical experience they will develop their skills and have the opportunity to put into practice all they are learning through their academic work. They will also compile portfolios of their work around five competences:

  • Personal Skills

  • Facilitation Skills

  • Leadership Skills

  • Community Skills

  • Ministry Skills

Taught modules relate directly to the students’ ministry contexts and enable them to enhance their practical and theological understanding and develop their ministry skills. Types of assessment will vary to reflect different learning styles and preferences.

Modules in Year 1: Theory and Practice of Pioneer Ministry, Bible in Practice, Understanding Communities and Culture, Human Development in Practice, Models of Contextual Theology, Learning and Discipleship, Basic Skills for Pioneer Ministry.

Modules in Year 2: Spirituality for Pioneer Ministry, Entrepreneurial Skills, Approaches to Mission, Leading and Managing, Pastoral Care in Pioneer Ministry, Negotiated Study, Advanced Skills for Pioneer Ministry.

The supportive, creative and practical learning environment of MCYM courses attracts students from diverse cultural and church backgrounds with a range of different work and ministry experiences and of varying educational ability. CYM has worked in partnership with Staffordshire University since 2009.

The FdA in Community Based Pioneer Ministry, validated by Staffordshire University, is a valuable academic qualification in its own right. However, students successfully completing this award will have the opportunity to progress to a BA Honours Degree in Contextual Ministry if they wish to do so.
