Totally Wired

A seminar for all parents, church leaders, youth leaders and anyone who cares about young people and technology.

They have their first mobile phone at the age of 7 and by the time they are teenagers, half of all their written communication will be by text message.

They spend more time online then watching TV and seven out of ten have their own website or social networking profile. They are as likely to upload their own videos as download music and they spend up to 3 hours a day talking in internet chat-rooms and instant messaging. This is where young people ‘live’ in 2010, a new digital world that is changing what it means to be a teenager in Britain today.

However, this world is alien to many of us who are responsible for safe guarding and caring for young people. How can parents, churches and youth workers not only understand what is happening, but also change the way we work with young people to take account of it?

This high-quality, interactive, enjoyable and challenging evening events aims to explore some of these key questions:

· What should parents and youth workers know about the digital world?

· How are young people spending their time online?

· What impact are online social networking sites having on young people?

· How will mobiles and the internet develop over the next few years?

· How can we help young people stay safe online?

· How can Christian youth and children’s work adapt to the online world?

Date: Thursday 11 November 2010

Time: 7:30pm

Venue: Rising Brook Church, Burton Square, Stafford, ST17 9LT

Tickets: £4 in advance or £5 at the door

Faith Group Conference: Thursday 11 November 2010

Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Authority are committed to ensuring that all residents across the City and County live long, healthy and safe lives.

In line with this commitment, a conference is being staged to which all faith groups from across Staffordshire are being invited. This event will be held at Fire & Rescue Service Headquarters on Thurs 11 November 2010, commencing at 9.00 am and finishing at 1:30 pm. A buffet lunch will be provided.

The aim of the conference is to inform, raise awareness and share information about how you and your organisation can work with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to assist in achieving the positive outcomes highlighted above.

Faith groups often come into contact with vulnerable people who would benefit from our proactive services. Sadly we are not always aware of those in need and occasionally they experience the trauma of a fire that could have been prevented.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and partners are aiming, through this conference, to provide you and your organisation with details of the range of proactive services we provide and how the Fire and Rescue Service and its partners can contribute to improving the lives and wellbeing of the communities we serve.

In support of this event in November, we are currently working in partnership with such organisations as the Saltbox Christian Centre, the Lichfield CoE Diocese, CLASP and various faith forums to publicise this conference and would very much appreciate if you would therefore consider joining us on the 11th. We hope that you will also pass this invitation to other faith based community workers involved in home visits to invite them to join us as well.

We have limited places available therefore an early response will be appreciated. You can send your reply by emailing r.watson@staffordshirefire.gov.uk.

In your reply, could you indicate the following:

· Your attendance or not

· Your role within your organisation and the age range/needs of the people that you visit

· Any preferred dietary requirements.

This will greatly help us with the organising of this event.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Climb Mount Sinai over the Easter bank holiday weekend – 2011

Trip Dates: 21 - 26 April 2011

Purpose: To raise funds for GMI (Gulu Mission Initiative)

Cost: £999 per person

Description of trip:

This is an unforgettable trip, to climb Mount Sinai over the Easter bank holiday weekend in 2011, the highlight being summiting Mount Sinai in time to see the sun rise on Easter Sunday. The holy peak stands 2882 metres above sea level. According to Christian tradition this is the biblical Mount Horeb where Moses received the tablets of the law with Ten Commandments. We start this trip at night, pick you up from your hotel in Sharm el Sheikh, and then drive in an air conditioned bus into the desert for around 2 hours until the holy valley of St Catherine is reached. There are two ways to reach the peak of the mountain: one consists of 3750 steps made by monks and the other one is a normal road carved by Egyptian authorities in the 19th century, it is an indirect route which can be traversed on foot or on animal back. On the top of Mount Sinai is a chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity. To the north of the chapel is a cave where traditional holds that God put Moses. The view from the peak is truly breathtaking and well worth the efforts of ascending. In the morning we’ll visit the famous monastery of St Catherine and you will see all of its treasures and come close to the life of the monks. Breakfast will be in St Catherine city. After the visits, we will drive you back to your hotel. You will have a day to relax, enjoy and unwind in Sharm el Sheikh and then fly back to the UK on the last day.

“This trip is of a moderate intensity and so is suitable for most hill climbers. We are AALA Licensed, ATOL protected and have staff that are fully qualified and are members of the ‘Association of mountaineering instructors’. From each person that participates in this once in a lifetime trip included in the costs shown above is a £100 donation to the GMI charity and so no further fund raising is required although would be welcomed”.

The trip itself will be done by Msl Mountaineering Ltd and all of there information is displayed on their website: http://www.msl-mountaineering.com/

For additional information regarding the GMI charity then please go to our website: http://www.gulumission.org/ or alternatively contact us on 01782 657206

If you wish to join us on this opportunity then please feel free to contact us on the Msl website above or call on the contact shown above and quote ‘NIGEL001’.

Nightchurch Update

From: Catherine Cowell

Hi Everyone!

Lots have been happening over the last few weeks.

With the refurbishment of the lounge and our smart new Nightchurch banners we continue to attract increasing numbers of guests to have a coffee, a flapjack and to chat.

This might sound a bit bland and insignificant, but it’s far more important than that. We are part of something much bigger and much more exciting. Week after week God shows up and something special happens. God is allowing us to join Him in His mission (Isaiah 61v1-3).

That excites me! It really does. It makes sacrificing Friday night and a bit of sleep totally worthwhile. I hope you agree!

The Friday before last was a really special night. We were blessed by the visit of the new Bishop of Stafford and his wife, Geoff and Ann Annas. They were excited and impressed by the work of Nightchurch. They were both very warm, down-to-earth individuals and they joined in enthusiastically, handing out lollipops, flapjacks, making coffee and washing-up. Between them they had a number of significant conversations with passers by, with Geoff at one point bravely assisting a distraught man who had just been punched in a fight. We hope to see them again, when schedules allow.

We were also delighted to be joined by two trainee Methodist ministers, who had not only travelled all the way from Birmingham to be with us, but had also led a youth group that evening and had to be up early Saturday to run another youth event!

As it often happens the night began slowly, giving us the chance to be there for one another, chat and pray. Later it got busier and God brought in the people he wanted to touch. Amongst the many conversations and encounters one young lady who has been experiencing difficulties who has come in a number of times before was able to share some deep issues and was prayed for. There were tears and hugs and the lady was able to go away having been blessed by the love of God and the love shared by the night church team member who ministered to her. There was another moment of beautiful grace and reconciliation as two people once divided, hugged and became friends. Pete and Geoff prayed with one man, who had been involved in a fight. He spontaneously began confessing his sins, whilst they were praying for him, and became quite emotional. God was obviously up to something!

One chap who spent much of the night quietly sitting on a sofa was noticed at a Church the next day. There was an opportunity for prayer ministry and he seemed keen. He was prayed for and hugged and the look on his face was extraordinary as the love was clearly melting his heart. God had some significant things to say to him and we will hopefully see more of this young man.

Last Friday, we had a small team, but they had the very real sense that God was with them. One man arrived during the prayer time and was persuaded to come back later, which he did. If you would like to pray for him, this man who fought in Afghanistan. He has been an intermittent visitor to Nightchurch for over a year and used to be a difficult person to have around. He is now much calmer, and attributes this to some prayer he received at Nightchurch. The team was able to pray with him again on Friday.

As always we could do with some more volunteers. Please encourage your friends and those you know at church to come along and try out night Church, even if it’s only for an hour or so. People don’t need to be young, hip, good-looking, extrovert, or an expert on apologetics to really make a difference (even a partially sighted casual observer can see we are most certainly NOT!). God seems not to be fussy about who he uses. All you need to do is follow a few guidelines, be caring, able to listen to our guests and, willing to pray and thankfully God does the rest.

As always, many, many thanks for all your support and prayers.

Best wishes,

Catherine Cowell

Challenge North Staffs – reporting hate crime

Challenge North Staffs (CNS) is a new organisation which aims to promote the reporting of Hate Crime in the North Staffordshire area. We work with voluntary organisations such as Disability Solutions and North Staffs MIND, as well as the Police and Local Authorities.

CNS works towards the elimination of hate incidents in North Staffordshire to enable all members of the community to live in peace, free from fear, abuse or discrimination.

Hate Crime is defined as any criminal offence committed against a person or their property that is motivated by hatred of someone because of their:

  • Disability (including disability due to mental health),
  • Race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origin,
  • Religion,
  • Gender or sexual identity,
  • Sexual orientation or
  • Age

Hate Crime takes many forms and it can include physical attacks, damage to property, theft, offensive graffiti, threats, intimidation and bullying. CNS will also deal with discriminatory incidents that are not crimes, such as being refused entry into pubs or clubs.

CNS’s first step is to encourage reporting of all hate incidents and then we will offer advice and assistance to those affected. Therefore it is paramount that we advertise our service to the North Staffs community and we would be very grateful if you would allow our publicity material to be displayed on the premises.

It is easy to report an incident and anyone who witnesses or experiences any hate incident should contact us. Our telephone number is at the top of this letter. Any Information we receive is confidential and will only be passed on with permission.

Anyone requiring further information can contact me, the Project Officer, on the above telephone number or by e-mail at julie.wood@stoke-cab.org.uk.

A reporting form can also be completed by assessing the website http://www.blogger.com/www.challengenorthstaffs.org.
